Copper Harbor - Activities

There is so much to see and do when visiting Copper Harbor and we are sure that you will enjoy your visit. Here at the Harbor Lights Inn we like to inform our guests on the many points of interest to experience while visiting the northern most community in the Keweenaw.

SCENIC: The last 11 miles of US-41 coming to Copper Harbor is beautiful during any season. The fall colors are spectacular along this stretch. While visiting Copper Harbor you must take the M-26 Scenic Route, which follows the lakeshore for a beautiful view of the mountains, water and rock ledges. Stop and picnic at some of the roadside parks that are along M-26. Also many waterfalls can be seen from the car or within a short walking distance. Pick up a waterfall brochure to learn where the different waterfalls can be found. There are also beautiful sand beaches to explore along the way. Before exploring the beaches get pointers on what to look for agates, green stone and copper. Sunsets are also spectacular from this scenic drive.

TOURS: Take a "Sunset Tour" on the Isle Royale Queen III or plan a trip to the Isle Royale National Park. Copper Harbor is the gateway to Isle Royale. Take a “Lighthouse Tour” to the famous Copper Harbor Lighthouse and visit the lighthouse museum where you can see shipwreck exhibits and living quarters. A visit to Fort Wilkins is a must. This fort is an exciting museum where you can feel the history of the military life in the 1840’s. Copper Harbor is home to one of the states oldest one-room schoolhouses…built in the 1870’s and is still in operation. A viewing room allows you to see how today’s pupils blend with the past.

HIKING, BIKING, KAYAKING, CANOEING, FISHING, DIVING: Copper Harbor has many activities for those who enjoy spending time outdoors. There are many paved roads and rustic gravel roads to take through the wilderness on a bicycle (rentals and tours are available.) Wilderness trails for hiking from beginner to expert…go on your own or with a group led by guides. Walking trails take you through the wilderness to the beautiful Estivant Pines, which are 500-1000 years old! These magnificent trees were saved from logging and have been preserved. Explore the copper mines from above ground or below ground. Take a most interesting tour of the Delaware Mine. See the Keweenaw Adventure Company for tours, maps and rentals.

Sea Kayak Tours are a great way to get out and paddle the big lake. Like to fish…half-day and full-day charters are available with expert advise for catching those "big ones". For those who really want to see Lake Superior up close…scuba dive the Keweenaw Underwater Preserves.

SHOPPING/DINING: Visit the fine shops and restaurants downtown Copper Harbor from bakeries to sweet shops to craft stores. Get ready for some great food…try some fresh whitefish from Lake Superior.

CHURCH SERVICES: Visit Our Lady of the Pines Church, which is a hand hewn log chapel. Come to admire the church or attend Sunday Services. Nondenominational services are also held at the Community Center on Sunday mornings during the summer. Sunday church services are also held at the "Shepherd of the Sea”" at 8:30 all are welcome.

GOLF OR TENNIS: Join your friends for some golf or tennis. The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge offers a 9-hole, 36 par golf course and tennis courts. Tennis courts can also be found at the Copper Harbor School.
